Need of Classification in School Libraries in era of ICT Applications
<p>School library plays an important role in developing reading habits among students as well as developing their interest in reading and writing. Students can get inspired by the work of authors and their creations. Juvenile reading till adult fiction all is the basic which help them to learn how to express their ideas and draft their imagination through writings.</p>
Another basic function of school library is to provide information and reference for the school staff and students. Now a day, school libraries are also automated by the application of different software such as KOHA, Fedena (Which is school management software with a specific module of library management), Openbiblio etc. Different school libraries use their in house software. ICT application in school libraries are just a tool to access the required material immediately without wasting time as it locate or give the status of the material whether borrowed or available. ICT application doesn’t mean that it is the last solution to deal with the library services physical arrangement is still required to get the information on time through material.
Is there still a need to arrange school library with a proper classification system still if it is an automated library? The answer is YES.
In this high tech era still library classification have importance in a language of common man who think that what is the need of traditional library services like classification, cataloging, acquisition. The answer is that if a library patron asks about a book and your library is not classified and organized in a proper way how come it is possible to get the desired book in short span of time. In school libraries children need orientation in a way that they must learn how easily and quickly they can know the position of the books and library material. They must know which classification system their school library follows whether it is DDC, UDC or LC. If library software indicates that book is available so is it easy to find the location of book? Or any of the students have mingled the book in the shelf by him on any other shelf because of confusion where to keep book if the books of same subjects are placed on different shelves. The question is, in this case how library software helps us. Classification and location of the book provide us so many benefits. Like: Our library will be well organized. Material will be easy to find. In case of lost we will be pretty much sure that the book is not on its place and software can indicate who borrowed it last time. We will meet the international standards.
Library patrons other than students can save their time and never be hopeless if the material is present and easy to get. Library experts have observed and researched too much to get the solutions and libraries all around the world are well organized if running under professional librarian. One of the core and best service of library is classification otherwise there is no difference in a library and home bookshelves arranged by common people at their home. As Melvil Dewey have said once: “A library's function is to give the public in the quickest and cheapest way: information, inspiration, and recreation. If a better way than the book can be found, we should use it.” ― Melvil Dewey
